মানবতার বিরুদ্ধে অপরাধের তদন্তের একমাত্র স্থায়ী সংস্থা হিসেবে কাজ করছে আন্তর্জাতিক অপরাধ আদালত। দ্বিতীয় দফার ভোটে ১২৩ দেশের মধ্যে ৭২টি ভোট পেয়ে নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন করিম খান। আগামী জুনে তিনি প্রধান প্রসিকিউটর হিসেবে দায়িত্ব শুরু করবেন। এই পদে তিনি ৯ বছর দায়িত্ব পালন করবেন।
আয়ারল্যান্ড, ইতালি এবং স্পেনের প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বীদের হারিয়ে আইসিসিরি প্রধান প্রসিকিউটর হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন তিনি। আন্তর্জাতিক আদালতের ১৮ বছরের ইতিহাসে তিনি তৃতীয় প্রধান প্রসিকিউটরের দায়িত্ব পাচ্ছেন। বর্তমানে গাম্বিয়ার বিচারপতি ফাতো বেনসুদা এই দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন।
ব্রিটেনের পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ডোমিনিক রাব করিম খান কিউসির এই সাফল্যে তাকে স্বাগত জানিয়েছেন। তিনি বলেন, আন্তর্জাতিক আইনে করিম খানের বিস্তৃত অভিজ্ঞতার মাধ্যমে জঘন্য অপরাধের সঙ্গে যুক্ত থাকা ব্যক্তিদের বিচারের মুখোমুখি করা এবং তাদের কারণে যারা ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ হয়েছে তাদের ন্যায়বিচার পাওয়ার জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করবে।
২০১৮ সাল থেকে করিম খান ইরাকে আইএসের নৃশংসতায় দোষীদের চিহ্নিত করা এবং বিচারের আওতায় আনার লক্ষ্যে জাতিসংঘের তদন্তের নেতৃত্ব দিয়ে আসছেন।
আইনজীবী হিসেবে তার ২৭ বছরের ক্যারিয়ারে তিনি সাবেক যুগোস্লাভিয়ার যুদ্ধ এবং রুয়ান্ডার গণহত্যার সময় সংঘটিত অপরাধের ক্ষেত্রে আন্তর্জাতিক অপরাধ ট্রাইব্যুনালে কাজ করেছেন।
