এ বিষেয়ে র্যাবের গোয়েন্দা শাখার পরিচালক লেফটেন্যান্ট কর্নেল খায়রুল ইসলাম জানান, গতকাল রোববার (৬ জুন) রাতে গোপন তথ্যের ভিত্তিতে জালিয়াত চক্রের মূলহোতা ফারুককে গ্রেপ্তার করে র্যাব-৪ একটি দল। তার বিরুদ্ধে আইনগত ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হচ্ছে।
জানা যায়, রাজধানীর মিরপুর-২ এর ১৩ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডে ৩ বছর আগে ‘ইন্টার্ন ব্যাংকিং অ্যান্ড কমার্স’ নামে একটি এজেন্ট ব্যাংকিং প্রতিষ্ঠানের যাত্রা শুরু হয়। ২০১৮ সালে এই প্রতিষ্ঠান চালু করেন মোঃ উমর ফারুক, যার গ্রামের বাড়ি নোয়াখালী জেলার কবিরহাটের চাপরাশির হাটে।
ধীরে ধীরে এলাকায় পরিচিত হয়ে ওঠে ‘ইন্টার্ন ব্যাংকিং অ্যান্ড কমার্স’। এলাকার প্রায় দেড় হাজার গ্রাহক নিয়মিত গ্যাস, পানি ও বিদ্যুতের বিল দিতেন ফারুকের এজেন্ট ব্যাংকিংয়ের মাধ্যমে। বিল নেয়ার সময় একটি বেসরকারি ব্যাংকের সিলসহ সংশ্লিষ্ট বিলের রশিদ সরবরাহ করতেন ফারুক। তবে গত ২৩ জানুয়ারি থেকে উধাও হয়ে যায় উমর ফারুক। এলাকায় তার প্রতিষ্ঠানের ৩টি দোকানের প্রতিটিতেই ঝুলছে তালা।
এর পরপরই তিতাস কর্তৃপক্ষ মাইকিং করে জানায়, বিপুলসংখ্যক গ্রাহকের গ্যাসের বিল দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বকেয়া। এ কারণে শুরু হচ্ছে সংযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন করার অভিযান। এরপরেই বেরিয়ে আসে উমর ফারুকের ভয়ংকর প্রতারণার তথ্য। তার কাছে প্রায় দেড় হাজার গ্রাহকের জমা দেয়া বিল দেয়া হয়নি তিতাসে। একেকজনের বকেয়া পড়েছে দেড় থেকে দুই বছরের বিল। আনুমানিক ১০ কোটি টাকার বেশি হাতিয়ে নিয়ে উধাও হন ফারুক। এতদিন আত্মগোপনে থাকার পর র্যাবের হাতে ধরা পড়লেন এই ভয়ংকর প্রতারক।
