করোনাকালে বন্ধ রয়েছে কলেজ। তাই বাড়িতে বসে বসে অলস সময় না কাটিয়ে বিদেশি ফল সাম্মাম চাষ করে বাজিমাত করেছেন কুষ্টিয়া সরকারি কলেজের শিক্ষার্থী নাইম ইসলাম খোকন। তিনি ম্যানেজমেন্ট বিভাগের অনার্স প্রথম বর্ষের ছাত্র।
করোনায় বাড়িতে বসে অলস সময় পার না করে কিভাবে সময়টাকে সঠিকভাবে কাজে লাগানো যায় মূলত সেই চিন্তা থেকেই খোকনের বিদেশি ফল সাম্মাম চাষের পরিকল্পনা মাথায় আসে। প্রবাসী বড় ভাইয়ের পরামর্শে সৌদি ফল “সাম্মাম” চাষ করার উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করেন। পরে ইন্টারনেট ঘেঁটে ও কৃষি অফিসের পরামর্শে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে সাম্মাম চাষ শুরু করেন। আর তাতেই বাজিমাত করেছেন। প্রথমবারেই সাম্মাম চাষ করে বেশ সাফল্য পেয়েছেন।
কুষ্টিয়ার মিরপুর উপজেলার কচুবাড়ীয়া গ্রামের তরুণ কৃষি উদ্যোগতা নাইম প্রথম ৩৩ শতক জমি বর্গা নিয়ে সাম্মাম চাষ শুরু করেছেন।
পুষ্টিগুণে ভরপর বিদেশি এই ফল চাষাবাদ দেশে এখনও তেমন একটা প্রচলিত না। চাষে ঝুঁকি এবং চাষাবাদ পদ্ধতি সম্পর্কে প্রচারণার অভাব রয়েছে।
নতুন জাতের রসালো ফল উৎপাদনের খবরে প্রতিদিন তার খেত দেখতে আসছেন আশপাশের কৃষকরা। কেউ কেউ আগামীতে নতুন জাতের এই রসালো ফল উৎপাদনের জন্য খোকনের কাছ থেকে পরামর্শও নিচ্ছেন।
খেতে গিয়ে দেখা যায় কুমড়ো গাছের মতো লতানো গাছ। গাছের ফাঁকে ঝুলছে দেশি বাঙ্গীর মতো সাম্মাম নামের এই ফল। প্রায় প্রতিটি গাছই ফলে ভরপুর। বাঁশের বাতা আর পলিথিনের জালের ফাঁকে ফাঁকে পুরো খেত যেনো ফলে ভরে রয়েছে। এই খেতে পরিচর্যা করতে দেখা যায় নাইম ইসলাম খোকনকে।
খোকন জানান, কলেজ বন্ধ, তাই বাড়িতে অবসর সময় কাটাচ্ছিলাম। বিদেশ থেকে ভাই ফোন দিয়ে এই সাম্মাম চাষ করা সম্পর্কে বলেন। আমি ইউটিউব থেকে এটি কিভাবে চাষ করে সেটা জানলাম। পরে উপজেলা কৃষি অফিস থেকে পরামর্শ নিয়ে বগুড়ার একটি খামার থেকে এ ফলের চারা সংগ্রহ করি। সেই সাথে সেখানে গিয়ে চাষ সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত জেনে নিই।
খোকন নতুন এ ফল সম্পর্কে বলেন, সাম্মাম ফল খুবই পুষ্টি সমৃদ্ধ। বর্হিবিশ্বে এই ফলের বেশ প্রচলন রয়েছে। বাংলাদেশে এটির প্রচলন খুব একটা নেই। এ ফলকে সৌদিতে সাম্মামসহ বিভিন্ন দেশে রক মেলন, সুুইট মেলন, মাস্ক মেলন ও হানী ডিউ বলা হয়ে থাকে। দুই জাতের এ ফল রয়েছে। একটি জাতের বাইরের অংশ সবুজ আর ভেতরের অংশ লাল, আরেকটি জাতের বাইরের অংশ হলুদ এবং ভেতরের অংশ লাল। তবে খেতে দুই ধরনের ফলই খুব মিষ্টি ও রসালো।
চাষ সম্পর্কে তিনি বলেন, দোঁয়াশ মাটিতে সাম্মাম চাষ করা ভালো। মাটি ভালোভাবে চাষ করে বেড এবং নালা করে, মালচিং দিয়ে এ ফলের চাষ করতে হয়। তাহলে বেশ ভালো ফলন পাওয়া যায়। এটি খুবই অল্প সময়ের ফসল। গাছ লাগানোর দেড় মাসের মধ্যেই হয় সাম্মাম ফল।
খোকন বলেন, আমি প্রথমে প্রবাসী বড় ভাইয়ের কথামতো ঝুঁকি নিয়ে এ ফলের চাষ শুরু করেছি। এক বিঘা জমিতে আমার ৩ হাজার সাম্মাম গাছ রয়েছে। প্রতিটি গাছে ২-৩টি করে ফল রয়েছে। বেশি ফল রাখলে ফলন কম হয়। একেকটি ফলের ওজন হয় দেড় থেকে দুই কেজি। প্রতিটি গাছেই ফল বেশ ভালো এসেছে। প্রথমবার চাষ করায় এক বিঘা জমিতে আমার খরচ হয়েছে এক লাখ টাকার মতো। আগামীতে এর চেয়ে খরচ কম হবে। আশা করছি এ বছর দুই থেকে আড়াই লাখ টাকার মতো লাভ হতে পারে।
খোকন জানান, যেহেতু এই ফল কাঁচা-পাকা দুই অবস্থাতেই খাওয়া যায়, এজন্য কিটনাশকের পরিবর্তে আমি ফেরামন ফাঁদ ও আগাছা যাতে না হয় এজন্য মালচিং দিয়েছি। সেই সাথে বিষমুক্ত উপায়ে আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে চাষাবাদ করছি।
নতুন এই ফল এবং ফলের চাষাবাদ দেখতে দূর-দূরান্ত থেকে খোকনের জমিতে আসছে সেই সাথে আগতদের এ ফল চাষে উদ্বুদ্ধ করছে খোকন।
সাদেকুল নামের এক কৃষক বলেন, আমি এই গাছ লাগানো থেকে শুরু করে এই জমিতে দৈনিক হাজিরা হিসাবে কাজ করছি। এ জমিতে খুব ভালো ফল এসেছে। আর ফলগুলো খেতেও খুব ভালো। আগামীতে নিজের জমিতে আমি এ ফলের চাষ করবো।
এই এলাকার কৃষক নাজিম উদ্দিন বলেন, আমরা মনে করেছিলাম এই ছেলে পাগলের মতো কি চাষ করছে। কিন্তু এখন তো দেখছি বেশ ভালো গাছ আর ফল ধরেছে। শুনেছি এটি বিদেশি ফল, খেতেও খুব ভালো। এর আগে এ ফল আমাদের এলাকায় হয়নি। এই ফল প্রতি কেজি ২শ’ টাকা করে বাজারে বিক্রি করা যাবে। যদি লাভ হয়, তাহলে আগামীতে অনেকেই এই ফলের চাষ করবে।
স্থানীয় শিক্ষক মোস্তফা কামাল বলেন, সৌদি আরবের ফল এখানে চাষ হয়েছে বলে দেখতে এসেছি। দেখে খুবই ভালো লেগেছে। পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন চাষ করেছে সেই সাথে নতুন এ ফল দেখে মন ভরে গেছে।
বিদেশি এ ফল অধিক লাভজনক উল্লেখ করে উপসহকারী কৃষি কর্মকর্তা সাদ্দাম হোসেন জানান, আধুনিক কৃষি গতানুগতিক কৃষিকাজের চেয়ে লাভজনক। সাম্মাম বিদেশি ফল তবে আমাদের এখানেও চাষ করা সম্ভব। নাইম নামের তরুণ কৃষককে আমরা চাষে পরামর্শ দিয়ে সার্বক্ষণিক সহযোগিতা প্রদান করে যাচ্ছি। খোকন বিষমুক্ত আধুনিক উপায়ে চাষ করে বেশ সাফল্য পেয়েছেন। আগামীতে এ চাষ বৃদ্ধি পাবে বলেও আশা করেন তিনি।
মিরপুর উপজেলা কৃষি কর্মকর্তা রমেশ চন্দ্র ঘোষ বলেন, রক মেলন বা সাম্মাম বিদেশি ফল হলেও আমাদের দেশে এটির চাষ করা সম্ভব। মিরপুর উপজেলার কচুবাড়ীয়া এলাকার একজন তরুণ এক বিঘা (৩৩ শতক) জমিতে এ বছর এ ফলের চাষ করেছে। সে খুব ভালো ফলও পাচ্ছে।
