এক সময়ের জনপ্রিয় ফসল কাউন সারাদেশে এখন রয়েছে বিলুপ্তির পথে। গাইবান্ধায় এ ফসল চাষে ঝুঁকছেন কৃষকরা। নতুন উদ্ভাবিত বারী কাউন-২ জাতের কাউনের ফল ভালো হওয়ায় সম্ভাবনার স্বপ্ন দেখছেন কৃষকরা।
জানা যায়, গাইবান্ধার সাঘাটায় যমুনা নদীর বুকে জেগে ওঠা বালু চরে কাউন চাষ করা হচ্ছে। গাইবান্ধা কৃষি প্রশিক্ষণ ইন্সটিটিউটের সরেজমিন বিভাগের তত্ত্বাবধানে নতুন উদ্যোমে কাউন চাষ শুরু করেছেন কৃষকরা।
সাঘাটা উপজেলায় যমুনা নদী দ্বারা বেষ্টিত চরাঞ্চলে সরেজমিনে দেখা যায়, হলদিয়া, কানাইপাড়া, গাড়ামারা, দীঘলকান্দী, চিনিরপটল, কুমারপাড়া, কালুরপাড়া ও পাতিলবাড়িসহ বিভিন্ন চরের কৃষকরা কাউন চাষ শুরু করেছে। একসময় কাউনের চালের ভাত, পায়েস ও পান্তা খেয়ে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করতো চরাঞ্চলের মানুষ।
সে কাউন এখন আর দরিদ্র মানুষের খাবার নয়, কাউনের চালের পিঠা, পায়েস ও মলাসহ বিভিন্ন খাদ্যসামগ্রী গ্রাম বাংলার পাশাপাশি শহরের মানুষের শখের খাবারে পরিণত হয়েছে। একসময় গাইবান্ধার চরাঞ্চল জুড়ে বালু আর বালু। সময়ের সঙ্গে সেখানে পলি পড়ে সে বালুময় চরাঞ্চল এখন ফসল ফলানোর উপযোগী হয়েছে। চরগুলোতে এখন নানা ধরণের ফসল উৎপাদন হচ্ছে।
গাইবান্ধা কৃষি প্রশিক্ষণ ইন্সটিটিউট ও কৃষি সম্প্রসারণ অধিদফতরের দেয়া তথ্য অনুযায়ী, জেলার বিভিন্ন নদী বেষ্টিত চরাঞ্চলের প্রায় দুই হাজার বিঘা জমিতে কাউন চাষ করা হয়েছে।
সাঘাটার চিনিরপটল চরের কৃষক আমিনুল ইসলাম বলেন, চরের একজন কৃষক ১৫-২০ বিঘা পর্যন্ত জমি কাউনের চাষ করতে পারেন। এরআগে দুই হাজার থেকে আড়াই হাজার টাকা ব্যয়ে দেশি জাতের কাউনের আবাদ করে প্রতি বিঘায় চার-পাঁচ মণ কাউনের ফলন হতো। ফলনও ছিল কম সঙ্গে বাজারে দামও ছিল অনেক কম। ফলে লাভ না হওয়ায় দিন দিন কাউন চাষের প্রতি আগ্রহ হারান কৃষকরা।
হলদিয়া ইউনিয়নের দীঘলকান্দি গ্রামের মইনুল ইসলাম বলেন, বর্তমানে বারী কাউন-২ জাতের প্রতি বিঘা জমিতে উৎপাদন হয় ১০-১২ মণ। দেশীয় জাতের তুলনায় ফলন প্রায় তিনগুণ। প্রতি মণ কাউন বাজারে বিক্রি হয় ১৬০০-১৭০০ টাকায়।
খরচ কম সেইসঙ্গে লাভ বেশি। বাজারে চাহিদাও রয়েছে এর। এ কারণে লাভবান হওয়ার স্বপ্ন নিয়ে কাউনের আবাদ শুরু করেছেন কৃষকরা।
হলদিয়া ইউপি চেয়ারম্যান ইয়াকুব আলী বলেন, দেশি জাতের ফলন কম হওয়ায় দিন দিন কাউনের আবাদ থেকে মুখ ফিরে নিয়েছিল কৃষকরা। আশা করা হচ্ছে, আগামী বছর এ কাউন চাষ দ্বিগুণ হবে।
গাইবান্ধা কৃষি প্রশিক্ষণ ইন্সটিটিউটের সরেজমিন বিভাগের প্রধান বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা আব্দুল্যাহ আল মাহমুদের বলেন, পাঁচ বছর ধরে উদ্ভাবিত রাবী কাউন-২সহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের ফসলের চাষ হচ্ছে চরে। চাষে আধুনিক কৃষি প্রযুক্তি ও নতুন উদ্ভাবিত জাতের শস্যবীজ ব্যবহার করে অধিক ফসল উৎপাদনের মাধ্যমে চরাঞ্চলের কৃষকরা লাভবান হচ্ছেন।
