শ্রীলঙ্কায় একটি হাতি যমজ সন্তানের জন্ম দিয়েছে। গত প্রায় ৮০ বছর পর দেশটিতে এই বিরল ঘটনা ঘটলো।
বার্তা সংস্থা রয়টার্স জানিয়েছে, ২৫ বছর বয়সী ওই হাতির নাম সুরাঙ্গি। পিন্নাওয়ালা এলিফ্যান্ট অরফানেজে ওই যমজ পুরুষ হাতির জন্ম দেয় সুরাঙ্গি।
ওই দুই শিশু হাতির বাবা ১৭ বছর বয়সী পান্ডুও এই অরফানেজে বাস করে। পিন্নাওয়ালা এলিফ্যান্ট অরফানেজের প্রধান রেনুকা বন্দরনায়েকে বিবিসিকে বলেছেন, শিশু দুটি এবং তাদের মা ভালো আছে। শিশু হাতি দুটি তুলনামূলকভাবে ছোট কিন্তু তারা স্বাস্থ্যবান।
বিবিসি বলছে, ১৯৪১ সালে সবশেষ পালিত কোনও হাতি যমজ সন্তানের জন্ম দিয়েছিল দেশটিতে। সোসাইটি ফর দ্য প্রোটেকশন অব অ্যানিমেলস অ্যাব্রড জানিয়েছে, হাতির যমজ সন্তান জন্ম দেয়ার সম্ভাবনা মাত্র ১ শতাংশ। আর বন্য আফ্রিকান হাতির মধ্যেই যমজ জন্ম দেয়ার ঘটনা বেশি বলেও জানাচ্ছে তারা।
সংস্থাটি বলছে, একটি আফ্রিকান হাতি সারা জীবনে চার থেকে পাঁচটি সন্তানের জন্ম দিতে পারে। আবার কিছু কিছু হাতি ২২ মাস পর্যন্ত গর্ভবতী থাকতে পারে।
আহত হাতি এবং পরিত্যক্ত শিশু হাতিকে বাঁচানোর জন্য ১৯৭৫ সালে পিন্নাওয়ালা এলিফ্যান্ট অরফানেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়েছিল। এই অরফানেজে এখন ৯০টির বেশি হাতি রয়েছে এবং সেই তালিকায় যোগ হলো এই যমজ হাতিশাবকও।
