সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায় প্রাণ হারালেন দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার বৃহত্তম শহর জোহানেসবার্গের নতুন মেয়র জোলিডি মাতোঙ্গো (৪৬)। সোমবার (২০ সেপ্টেম্বর) বিবিসির খবরে বলা হয়, দুর্ঘটনার আগে মেয়র প্রেসিডেন্ট সিরিল রামাফোসার সঙ্গে প্রচারণা চালাচ্ছিলেন।
স্থানীয় সংবাদমাধ্যমের প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়, শনিবার সড়কে এক পথচারীকে বাঁচাতে গিয়ে মেয়রের গাড়িটি একটি ভ্যানের সঙ্গে ধাক্কা খায়। এতে সেই পথচারী ও গাড়িচালকও মারা যান। নিহত হন মেয়রও।
করোনায় জোহানেসবার্গের আগের মেয়র মারা যাওয়ার পর ১০ আগস্ট জোলিডি মাতোঙ্গো (৪৬) মেয়র হন। এর ৪০ দিনের মাথায় তিনিও প্রাণ হারান।
জোলিডি মাতোঙ্গো একজন জিম্বাবুয়ে অভিবাসীর ছেলে। তিনি ১৩ বছর বয়স থেকে দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকায় রাজনীতিতে যুক্ত। প্রচারণা চালাচ্ছিলেন বর্ণবাদের বিরুদ্ধে।
এদিকে মেয়রের মৃত্যুতে দুঃখ প্রকাশ করে দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার প্রেসিডেন্ট বলেন, এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনাটি মেনে নেওয়া আসলে কঠিন। মৃত্যুর কিছুক্ষণ আগেও মাতোঙ্গো আমার এবং সোয়েটোর বাসিন্দাদের সঙ্গে কথা বলেছিলেন।
