হাঁড়িতে ভাসিয়ে শিশুকে পোলিও টিকা খাওয়াতে নিয়ে এলেন বাবা

লাগাতার বৃষ্টিতে গ্রামের মাটির রাস্তা ওঠেছে পানি। সদ্য বাবা হওয়া নিজামুদ্দিন মোল্লা তাই কার্যত ঘরবন্দি। তারই মধ্যে রোববারের সকালে ‘আশাদিদিদের’ ডাকাডাকি, ‘পোলিয়ো খাওয়ানোর বাচ্চা থাকলে নিয়ে এসো গো…।’

রাস্তায় পানি যতই থাকুক, দেরি করতে চাননি ব্যাগ তৈরির কারিগর নিজামুদ্দিন। নবজাতককে বড় মুখওয়ালা অ্যালুমিনিয়ামের হাঁড়িতে শুইয়ে জলে ভাসিয়ে পোলিও টিকা খাওয়াতে নিয়ে গেলেন তিনি। সঙ্গীর কাঁধে চাপিয়ে আনলেন আড়াই বছর বয়সের বড় ছেলে শামিমকেও। বললেন, “বাচ্চা দু’টোকে পোলিও তো খাওয়াতেই হবে। তাই এ ভাবেই পৌঁছে গেলাম।”

পোলিও টিকা খাওয়াতে এ দিন সেখানেই নবজাতককে হাঁড়িতে ভাসিয়ে নিয়ে আসতে দেখে চমকে উঠেছিলেন আশাকর্মী থেকে এএনএম (২) বা অগ্জ়িলিয়ারি নার্স মিডওয়াইফ-ও।

কোথাও কোমর সমান, কোথাও হাঁটু সমান জলে নেমে বাচ্চাদের পোলিয়ো টিকা খাওয়াতেই নিজামুদ্দিনদের এলাকায় পৌঁছে গিয়েছিলেন আশাকর্মী সোনালি প্রধান এবং এএনএম (২) নমিতা হালদার।

তারা বলেন, “আমরা প্রায় হাঁটুজলে দাঁড়িয়ে ডাক দিলাম। কারণ তার পরে জল এত বেশি যে, পোলিও বাক্স নিয়ে যাওয়া মুশকিল।”

তাই বলে বাচ্চাকে হাঁড়িতে শুইয়ে পোলিও! কল্পনাও করতে পারেননি ওই স্বাস্থ্যকর্মীরা। সোনালি জানাচ্ছেন, আচমকাই তারা দেখেন, জলে ভাসানো একটি হাঁড়ি ধরে ধীরে ধীরে এগিয়ে আসছেন নিজামুদ্দিন। পেছনে অন্য এক জনের কাঁধে তার বড় ছেলে।

সোনালি বলেন, “প্রথমে চমকে উঠেছিলাম। পরে বুঝলাম, হাঁড়িতে করে একরত্তিটাকেই নিয়ে আসছে।”

নমিতা জানান, শিশুকে ওই ভাবে আনতে দেখে তাঁরাও মূল রাস্তা থেকে নেমে কিছুটা এগিয়ে যান। নিজামুদ্দিনের কাছে জানতে চান, “হাঁড়িতে করে কেন?” বছর সাতাশের নীজামুদ্দিন তাঁদের জানান, স্ত্রী সাফিয়া খাতুনের জল ঠেলে আসার ক্ষমতা নেই। আবার তিনি নিজেও ১৫ দিন বয়সের ছেলেকে কোলে নিয়ে জল ঠেলে আসতে ভয় পাচ্ছিলেন। কোনও ভাবে খুদে যদি পড়ে যায়! তাই আশাকর্মীদের ডাক শুনেই বাড়িতে থাকা বড় মুখের হাঁড়িতে ছেলেকে কাঁথায় মুড়িয়ে শুইয়ে নিয়ে আসার পরিকল্পনা করেন নিজামুদ্দিন।

রাজ্যের স্বাস্থ্য কর্মকর্তা অজয় চক্রবর্তী এদিন জানান, সাধারণত মায়েরাই বাচ্চাদের পোলিও খাওয়াতে নিয়ে আসেন। সেখানে এক জন বাবা দুর্যোগের মধ্যে এ ভাবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন, এটা খুবই প্রশংসার।

তিনি বলেন, দুর্যোগ ঠেলে, কোমর সমান জলে দাঁড়িয়ে আশাকর্মী ও স্বাস্থ্যকর্মীরা যে-ভাবে পোলিও খাওয়ানোর কাজ করছেন, তাতে কোনও প্রশংসাই যথেষ্ট নয়। এদের জন্য গোটা স্বাস্থ্য দপ্তর গর্বিত।
